Korigad Fort, Lonavala

4.6
Korigad is a hill fort located about 20km south of Lonavla in Pune district, Maharashtra, India. Its date of construction is not known but likely predates 1500. It is about 923 m above sea level. The planned township of Aamby Valley is built over the fort's southern and eastern foothills. The closest village is Peth Shahpur, about 1km north of the fort.HistoryThis fort was forcibly taken over into his kingdom by Chhatrapati Shivaji along with the forts of Lohagad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona in 1657. On March 11, 1818, Colonel Prother tried to take over this fort but even after a prolonged siege could not make any headway. Finally on 14 March, by igniting the stored ammunition by means of a loose cannonball he succeeded and this fort went to the British.GeographyThe fort is located about 923m above sea level, rising over 200m higher than the neighboring valleys. To the east, there lie two artificial lakes part of the Aamby Valley project which later drain into the Mulshi reservoir. There are two lakes on the top of the fort.Structures on the FortA temple to its patron goddess Koraidevi also exists along with several smaller temples to dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva. The former has been recently renovated and has a 3 foot high Deepmala(tower of lamps). The interesting part of the fort is that its wall is completely intact and one can walk along its entire perimeter(about 2 km). Its massive gate is also intact. Several ruins of older structures within the fort still exist. It has six cannons - the largest of which called the Laxmi Toph is located near the Korai Devi temple.

  • Small fort but great for hiking, no difficult patches nothing, proper route is available to reach the top. One should have their own car or bike to reach the fort from Lonavla. I guess public transport is not available (I'm not sure about this). Nothing much to see from top
  • Pretty easy trek, you'll finish it in a couple of hours. A nice lake on the top of the hill. Ideal for a short easy hike and a nice picnic. Would suggest to carry some home cooked food !
  • IT'S An INCREDIBLE Fort. It's so Huge and there is lots up there which comes under MUST visit list. Our group went on 9 July 2017, It's a easy trek, we had way too much fun, Little crowded on weekends 🤗🤗✌✌ Do Try this monsoon
  • Great place, good for trekking, wonderful view. It was awesome walking through the forest, climbing 500 steps( some caves on the way make it more interesting). There is a small pool where you can relax soaking in the wonderful view. No drinking water available. But two small kiosks provide lemon juice, tea, pakodas and Maggi noodles. You will relish this stuff after the track.
  • There's a lot to explore on this trek. Trek is easy but if you are an explorer then you might find some corners which others would not have experienced. And the fog all around is unforgettable 😍 The route to Korigad is no less beautiful. The snaky roads with Ghaats and Waterfalls on the other sides will make your day.
