Ekvira Devi Temple, Lonavala

3.4
#5 of 9 in Historic Sites in Lonavala
Religious Site Tourist Spot
See a once-center of Buddhism, now a Hindu temple in the cave at Ekvira Devi Temple. The Goddess Ekvira is worshipped in the caves by the Koli fishermen community and the local tribes. Participate in the festivals organized here, ranging from traditional dances to folk musical festivals, all in the name of the Hindu goddess. The somewhat tiring climb is eased by ample shops for refreshment and resting areas, and rewarded with spectacular view from the temple. Be careful of the monkeys and protect your valuables. Taking photos is prohibited. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Ekvira Devi Temple by using our Lonavala itinerary builder.

Where to stay in Lonavala

A resort town through and through, Lonavala has a large collection of accommodations to meet the needs of its guests. The built-up area around the train and bus stations provide some of the most suitable accommodation in town for budget-conscious travelers, including simple guesthouses and a couple of hostels. To the north around the bend of the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway, things get a little pricier and a little more luxurious, although standard hotels and guesthouses can still be found. Following the main roads out of the urban area in most directions, you'll find resorts in scenic spots, offering the chance to enjoy the fresh air.

  • Ekvira Devi Temple is on the same hillside as the Karla Caves. There was nothing much on the way to the temple when I had last visited Karla Caves and the Ekvira Devi Temple nearby about twenty years ...  more »
  • The temple is nice, just located outside the Karla caves. The hike is fun, about 375 steps to climb. Shops all along the way.  more »
