At an altitude of 3,600 m (11,800 ft), Thiksey Monastery welcomes both daring travelers and locals looking for a spiritual awakening. Resembling the architecture of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, this 12-story complex houses many Buddhist relics and artworks, including stupas, statues, wall paintings, and swords. Within the complex you can visit a temple housing a 15 m (49 ft) high statue of Maitreya (future Buddha), covering two stories of the entire structure.
