Likir Gompa, Leh

4.5
#5 of 23 in Historic Sites in Leh
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Travel the scenic mountain road to Likir Gompa, nestled at a high altitude with memorable views of the surrounding lofty landscape. One of the oldest monasteries in the region, the original structure supposedly dated back almost 1,000 years, when it was constructed by King Lhachen Gyalpo. Since then, it has undergone destruction and reconstruction. Observe the gigantic golden statue of the Buddha, visible from far away as you approach, and once at the monastery, venture on to the roof for outstanding views across the hills. A visit to Likir Gompa represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Leh vacation planner to plot your vacation.

  • A very large statue in golden color can be seen here. From inside you have the most beautiful views of the outside world. There is an open place at the back of the monastery which offers pleasing to the eyes view. We were lucky enough to witness snowfall as well :) A mesmerizing experience!
  • Beautiful Buddhist Temple. (Tibetan Lama Temple)
  • a stunning and colourful buddhist monastery overlooking the indian himalayas. there's two rooms that you can wander around and also a museum. there is also a big golden statue of maitreya. we went in december so there were no monks there as it was winter. the floor is extrememly cold so make sure to wear socks. it's a definite must see if you're in the region.
