  • During our stay in Ladakh we did a few monasteries but Rizong was the best for us. It is located at the bottom of a mountain and the place is magical and serene. After this visit our agency JU-LEH planned us a short hike. Only in the wave with our driver - guide! Beautiful images in mind.

  • Located in a fantastic site, Rizong is one of the last monasteries built in Ladakh. The road to get there along a narrow valley where a succession of breathtaking scenery. Is a true place of peace, serenity, suitable for meditation, lost in the mountains. There is a real atmosphere of calmness and harmony, there are no noise whatsoever unless the wind blowing through the rooftops and the narrow gorge. Its history is known precisely. Tsultim Nima, its founder was born in the village of Saspol in 1790. To comply with the orders of his father, he lived very actively in the secular world before engaging in religious life. After leaving the village and the family went to Tholing where he was ordained monk. After some time, he went on a pilgrimage on the shores of Lake Manasarovar, where he chose a cave mountains and gathered in meditation, living solely of tsampa and glacier water. One day, a very dense smoke began to rise from the shores of Lake and he alighted from his Hermitage to take hot water. He was extremely surprised to find his sister Garmo among pilgrims come to the Lake which begged him to return to his village to found a monastic community, accusing him of selfishness for her wanting to be alone in meditation. Because he didn't want to hear reason, she requested the arbitration of the Abbot of Tholing that gave her reason. Back to Ladakh retired in the Hermitage of Dzonglung where he was soon joined by many other monks and pilgrims and what made him decide to turn the Hermitage in a monastery by choosing the site of Rizong. Towards the end of his life, which has become famous, founded the monastery of Samtan Ling in the Nubra Valley.

Budget-friendly accommodation options lie throughout Jammu City--mostly pilgrim guesthouses with dormitory-style rooms situated near the main train station, around Vinaik Bazaar, and in some of the temple complexes. You can also opt for one of the small but modern mid-range hotels, in close proximity to the riverbank. If visiting in summer, try to book ahead, as the hotels and guesthouses can be full during the holy month of Shraavana.
