Neyyar Dam, Kovalam

(3.8/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web)
Take a walk along the top of the barrier and enjoy the view of an idyllic lake at Neyyar Dam, a popular picnic destination in Trivandrum for those seeking serenity and isolation. Created in 1964, the dam is a part of a large wildlife sanctuary protecting Asiatic lions. Sambar deer, gaurs and lion-tailed macaque also make home in the thick forest around the lake. Take a boat ride around the lake and see an aquarium and gardens near the dam. With a number of streams flowing in the lake, great many people come here to unwind and take a dip. • You can go to diversify leisure. Enough easily accessible from Kavolama and Trivandrum, making the trip. Walk around the Lake, between the islets of animals (lions-see from the bus, but it's close, shares only glass, deer-very far, sfotat' can be used only on the telephoto lens, but a pleasant walk through the most beautiful views of the island and around) and Dam-Lake with Islands and one side and falls from the wall on the other. Decorated beautifully, but nothing special

  • Very nice and quiet when you want to break from the bustle of the lively times. Suitable also for a nice walk.

  • Neyyar is a gravity dam on the Neyyar River in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, South India, located on the foot of the Western Ghats about 30 km from Thiruvananthapuram. It was established in 1958 and is a popular picnic spot. Lying against the southern low hills of the Western Ghats, Neyyar Dam has a scenic lake. The Neyyar Dam is a concrete gravity-type with a height of 56 m (184 ft) and length of 294 m (965 ft). Its structural volume is 105,000 m3 (3,708,040 cu ft). The dam creates a reservoir of 1,060,000,000 m3 (859,356 acre•ft) of which 1,010,000,000 m3 (818,820 acre•ft) is active (useful) capacity. The reservoir's surface area is 91 km2 (35 sq mi) and the dam's spillway has a 809 m3/s (28,570 cu ft/s) maximum discharge capacity. Wild life includes gaur, sloth bear, Nilgiri Tahr, jungle cat and Nilgiri langur, wild elephants and sambar deer..
  • This is a old gravity dam built around 1950s. It is for irrigational purpose and two canals are used to provide water for farming. Also kalipara project, a drinking water supply project operates on Neyyar dam. Its tourist attractions include a lion Safari park, deer park, crocodile park, snake park and boating.
  • A beautiful place that lets you breathe out your tensions into nature. Whatever your reason to travel here, reach before noon. (All my travel directions are as if you're arriving at the dam with the reservoir on your left and canal on the right) There is a swimming pool next to the park lining the main canal. It closes at 1700 hrs. It's the only place which felt neglected and unhygienic. So, avoid any swimming here. Once you enter the premises through the main entrance, take your vehicle and climb to the top. You will be permitted to walk on top of the dam and head towards the boat club. There is a park on top with a viewing tower that's a must climb! Head further down and you will come across boating facilities that will take you for the lion safari, crocodile park as well as the deer park. View the pics uploaded for any further information. It's a great get away... try it if you can
