Thangassery Light House, Kollam

4.5
#1 of 11 in Historic Sites in Kollam
Climb the stairs and enjoy the panorama from Thangassery Light House, the tallest lighthouse on the coast of Kerala. Built in 1902, this 43 m (144 ft) tall cylindrical tower features red and white diagonal stripes, making it a landmark of the area. Look back down at the interesting pattern created by the spiral staircase inside the tower, then see the sun set and the moon rise simultaneously. With its red oblique bands, the structure resembles a giant candy cane from afar. • My first light house! It is around 41meters. The view from the top is beautiful. You can see the whole town on one side and the sea on the other side. There were lot of people when we went and the balcony(don't know what you call it) is really small. Go when you feel not many people will be there and you spend some good time up. There is a lift to go up but if possible walk down. The narrow stairs with small windows is also a good experience.
  • We must actually pay to visit the lighthouse. It's just a light house. And they charged for camera too. But more than the light house there was a pathway like for daily walkers..It's totally free of cost and best place for photography.Do visit that place. It's only opened until 10'o clock in the morning from 6'o clock I think so.
  • Amazing place to come in the day time. There is a lift up or you can choose to take a slow walk up. Enjoy the miniature window views as you climb up. Take some time to enjoy the light room where you can notice the large glass reflector lenses to focus the light beams. The view up top is just amazing, and can look far into the ocean. Very windy up top as well, which makes this a wonderful place to spend some time. There is very limited space in the deck on top.
  • Good place to visit with friends and family. Can get a good view of Kollam beach and city from a bird's eye view. Now lift is available but have to climb a few steps from the top. The only problem is parking during peak time.
  • It was quite a sunny day that I decided to visit the Thangassery Lighthouse. The climb up to the top is quite exciting, with the narrow round stairs. There is an elevator in the middle too, if you don't feel like taking the stairs. We are asked to leave our footwear outside, so the stairs do feel quite stressful. The entry fee in Rs.20 and to take photographs, you have to pay an extra Rs. 10. The view from the top is amazing. People with vertigo will freak out, a bit.
