Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata (Calcutta)

Salt Lake Stadium or Yuva Bharati Krirangan is a multipurpose stadium in Bidhannagar, Kolkata, West Bengal, with a capacity of 85,000. It is the largest stadium in India by capacity. Before its renovation in 2011, it was the second largest football stadium in the world, having a seating capacity of 120,000. Prior to the construction and opening of Rungrado May Day Stadium in 1989, it was the largest football stadium in the world. Reportedly, a total of 85,000 bucket seats have been installed in the stadium for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in India. The capacity of the stadium has been increased from 68,000 to 85,000 for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. The stadium will host the final match of the U-17 World Cup, alongside hosting other matches of the tournament. The stadium's record attendance was recorded in 1997 when 131,781 spectators watched the Federation Cup Semifinal between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. The stadium recently switched back to natural grass from artificial turf as part of the preparations for hosting the U-17 World Cup in 2017. The new turf was unveiled in a Kolkata Derby match between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan during the 2015–16 Calcutta Premier Division match.AboutThe stadium was established in 1984 because the club grounds in the Maidan area, each with capacity around 20,000, were proving too small for the huge crowd that occupied the grounds on matchdays. And while the Eden Gardens was there to handle some of the bigger games, like the Kolkata Derby, the pressure of handling both cricket and football was proving to be a bit too much for the stadium.

The site does not offer guided tours or shops to buy souvenirs; just come and go. Anyway, worth a visit for football freaks like me. The stadium holds to 80000 people, i.e. is gigantic. But, like everything else in India, you can always get a lot more crowded. When we visited the stadium passed by small reforms, so it wasn't possible to see a play there. Should be an incredible experience.

One of the best soccer stadiums in India. It is the largest stadium in India when it comes to capacity. The atmosphere is alive and abuzz with activity. Although India is nowhere near the top teams in the World, but the way people come here to celebrate the game, Football, is worth the watch. It has been recently upgraded and refurbished to accommodate for the FIFA U-17 Football World Cup. There are lines of washrooms, restaurants, entry gates and exit gates. There is a proper infrastructure to manage all the electric activities across the stadium.

Really a good stadium for sports and specially football. Bengalees are football lovers and it's an amazing asset. Maintenance was really very poor but recently renovation work executed.
