Nature / Park
Take a leisurely stroll along the river or sit and admire the views at one of Kolkata’s oldest recreational spots, Prinsep Ghat. The ghat, meaning "stairs leading down to a body of water," was built in 1841 during the British Raj. Look out for the beautifully designed monument to Prinsep, designed with Greek and gothic in-lays. The spot becomes popular in the evenings and at weekends, when families and couples head down to go boating along the river or enjoy some food from one of the many stalls. In 2012, a 2 km (1.2 mi) stretch of the riverbank was given a facelift and now boasts landscaped and illuminated gardens, water fountains, and footpaths. Stroll along the paths while enjoying an ice cream from one of the local vendors. Put Prinsep Ghat at the forefront of your travel plans using our Kolkata (Calcutta) vacation generator.

  • Amazing place.. Ganga river ... beautiful ambiance... peaceful atmosphere... perfect for photography... beautiful ice cream shop scoop...allover very nice place..
  • One of the iconic places in Kolkata, the "jetty for the europeans" during the British Raj days. Better enjoyed during or after sunset. Plenty of seating arrangements and street food make this a popular place to hang out. Good for enjoying the gentle river breeze and very popular among photography enthusiasts.
  • Beautiful place for refreshment.. Street food, ice cream & cold drinks are easily available. Sitting beside 'Ganga', you can enjoy the sunset. Boats are available (by rent) for a short trip..
