Prinsep Ghat, Kolkata (Calcutta)

4.3
#2 of 13 in Parks in Kolkata (Calcutta)
Take a leisurely stroll along the river or sit and admire the views at one of Kolkata’s oldest recreational spots, Prinsep Ghat. The ghat, meaning "stairs leading down to a body of water," was built in 1841 during the British Raj. Look out for the beautifully designed monument to Prinsep, designed with Greek and gothic in-lays. The spot becomes popular in the evenings and at weekends, when families and couples head down to go boating along the river or enjoy some food from one of the many stalls. In 2012, a 2 km (1.2 mi) stretch of the riverbank was given a facelift and now boasts landscaped and illuminated gardens, water fountains, and footpaths. Stroll along the paths while enjoying an ice cream from one of the local vendors. • Lovely place to spend the evening with family and friends. Do enjoy the boat ride. A little bargaining can give you a good deal. Make sure you were life jacket before getting on the boat. Do enjoy lip smacking food at the restaurant just beside the ghat. You will get freshly made pizzas and sundaes.
  • Nice place to spend the late evening and watch the sunset over the river. Adjoining park and railway station are charming. The boat ride is recommended. James Prinsep was a British antiquarian who deciphered two scripts of Ancient India. Prinsep is one of the softer and gentler faces of the Raj. We should retain the name of this charming place.
