Prinsep Ghat, Kolkata (Calcutta)

4.3
#2 of 9 in Parks in Kolkata (Calcutta)
Take a leisurely stroll along the river or sit and admire the views at one of Kolkata’s oldest recreational spots, Prinsep Ghat. The ghat, meaning "stairs leading down to a body of water," was built in 1841 during the British Raj. Look out for the beautifully designed monument to Prinsep, designed with Greek and gothic in-lays. The spot becomes popular in the evenings and at weekends, when families and couples head down to go boating along the river or enjoy some food from one of the many stalls. In 2012, a 2 km (1.2 mi) stretch of the riverbank was given a facelift and now boasts landscaped and illuminated gardens, water fountains, and footpaths. Stroll along the paths while enjoying an ice cream from one of the local vendors. • This monument offers scenic beauty of the river Ganges. The bank has been decorated for tourists and looks wonderful in the evenings. Boat ride is also available. The view of the suspended bridge with water base presents a beautiful picture esp at the evenings. The food stalls nearby serve some great snacks and tea. One may also think of taking a quite stroll at the bank or just sit by it at the benches and enjoy the beauty of the place. Small boats, ferries and mini ships look amazing to watch while sitting quietly...but you will get a thousand opportunities to get embarrassed. Reason- cheap roadside Romeos and Juliets seen everywhere around with overflow of emotions for each other. Advisory: Do not visit the place with children or parents.
  • What a scenic beauty! And what can be more comforting than sipping a cup of piping hot tea or coffee and enjoying the soothing breeze???? This place is my favourite. Perfect for couples. An early morning visit in the winter is a must.
  • It's good when you see the monument from outside, its really a good place to visit and have pictures as scene is good. But inside the monument it's not very clean and the beauty seems to be lessened when you watch it closely. Overall I would say that it's really worth visiting once and enjoy the place. Nice space to sit and enjoy the whole view.
  • The renovated gardens surrounding the Princep memorial and the promenade along the bank of the Ganges is gorgeous at dusk. The light Bengali music being played adds to the charm of this place. There are plenty of options to grab a light snack just outside the area. Private boat rides on the Ganges are offered from a ghat opposite the train station.
  • Very nice place for casual outing. A boat ride a the Ganges will be a good idea. People come here for photography. A good tourist attraction of kolkata. Well maintained river side garden. Mostly clean. You can enjoy small bites of snacks here. The Vidyasagar bridge looks awesome from here.
