Kodanand Elephant Training Centre, Kodanad
Categories: Wildlife Areas, Nature & Parks
Kodanand Elephant Training Centre serves as a training center for elephants rescued from poachers. Elephant capture was banned in India in 1977, but the long tradition of elephant training--reportedly in a more humane instead of torture-based manner--is still very much alive here. The center also teaches mahouts (elephant handlers) how to handle elephants with more care. However, animal lovers might find this place disturbing because elephants are still kept in captivity, away from their natural habitat, and trained from early age to perform tasks that are not in their nature. A small adjoining park is home to deer and other wildlife. Nothing to watch here. Recently elephants were moved to another place called Abhayaranyam. Though there was a park, it's closed now. Only the view of Periyar river gives some satisfaction.
