Kodanand Elephant Training Centre, Kodanad

2.1
#2 of 6 in Parks in Ernakulam District
Elephant capture was banned in India in 1977, but the long tradition of elephant training--reportedly in a more humane instead of torture-based manner--is still very much alive at Kodanand Elephant Training Centre. The site also teaches mahouts (elephant handlers) how to handle elephants with care. A small adjoining park is home to deer and other wildlife. • This is a nice an dosage place if you are interested in seeing elephants in your close range. This facility helps government to detain elephants when it requires. Wild elephants which creates issues with villagers, domestic elephants which caught in different law suits and wild elephants which are found seriously injured will come here. The wild elephants will get training here and will become domestic elephants. You can get very close to elephants which are already friendly. You can also see the elephant bath if you come early morning. There are few deers as well in this facility. There are plenty of space for people to walk around under the shades of greatly maintained greenery. Small cafeteria, children's play area and toilet facilities are also there. I didn't liked the toilet area much as the door knobs were not in place and also there were lot of water pooled here and there. The car parking facility is good enough. You can park your car with peace of mind. The employees are very friendly.
  • Kodanad Elephant Training Centre, one of the largest elephant training centers in Kerala.  Since the capture of pachyderms was deemed illegal in the state, this training center has become even more valuable.  Visitors can visit daily during the hours of 8am-to 5pm.
  • By the banks of Periyar river in the district of Kodanad, Kodanad Elephant Training Centre is training location for elephants captured in the wild. A tourist location now with a small fees, there are chances to find an elephant under training sometimes. Makes for a walk through the compound. Would take upto 1-2 hours of your time at the maximum.
  • They serve as rescue centre for abandoned elephants.. it is nice to reach there early in the morning to see elephants being taken for bathe. When there are babies, its nice to see them being fed with bottled milk.. You can also see a small zoo..
  • Great place. Not likely to see training elephants. sometimes some baby elephants may be there. Just lucky to see.
