Vallarpadam Church, Kochi (Cochin)
Categories: Churches, Tourist Spots
Admire an impressive white baroque façade of Vallarpadam Church, a major pilgrimage center for Christians built on a lake island. Originally built in 1524 by the Portuguese and then destroyed by the Dutch, the present-day structure dates to 1676 featuring impressive square-based six story twin towers overlooking the Vembanad Lake. The basilica houses a picture of Mary and Jesus above the altar brought by Vasco De Gama as well as a shrine with a picturesque statue of Virgin Mary, locally known as Vallarpadathamma, carrying a toddler Jesus. Climb the steps leading to the top of one of the towers to get a panoramic view.
