Santa Cruz Basilica, Kochi (Cochin)

(4.1/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Visit one of the eight basilicas in India at Santa Cruz Basilica, a church many hail as one of the best in the country. Although the Gothic-style church was originally built in 1558, the British destroyed it, before it was rebuilt again the the 19th century. Behind the plain white exterior, you can expect to find pastel colors and columns painted with frescoes and murals once you step inside. Look up and you'll see the ceiling paintings depicting scenes from the crucifixion of Christ. If you prefer to participate than admire, join in one of the church's regular services. • A church that dates back to many years with a history attached to it. Untouched by modernity, but very well maintained - a must visit for tourists to Kochi.
  • It is a must visit in Kochin. When I entered, i was feeling like I just stay there forever :). We visited around 4 PM and after some time there was prayer, everyone is free to attend that.
  • Another fine example of Catholic church in Kereaa, with its stunning white and blue exterior which has been meticulously maintained it has to be admired despite religious adherence.

  • The church stand right in middle of Fort Kochi on the way to the beach. Like many other churches in India, it also has lovely paintings on the wall. Nothing extraordinary but if in Kochi do visit it. It has huge open space in front.
  • Awesome church in Fort Kochi. It is one of the Basilica considered world wide. It is in the centre of Fort Kochi. School was also present attached to this Church.
  • one of the famous churches in Kochi. Liked the interiors, but could not move about much in the church as there was a wedding mass going on
  • One of the places you should not miss when in Fort Kochi. This is the largest church in Fort Kochi area and it is an operational church, which means Mass service is conducted through the week. Opens from the morning until evening time. When one visits here, be like the locals, take off your footwear when entering the church itself. The intricate design inside the church is beautiful and breath taking. Columns in the church are decorated with the way of the cross. and mini chandeliers hang from the ceiling. And the sanctuary is adorned by a large picture of the risen Christ. One can just sit quietly and feel blessed. Must not miss this place.
  • A quaint little church. Well kept to preserve history.
