Kerala Folklore Museum, Kochi (Cochin)
Categories: History Museums, Architectural Buildings, Museums, Tourist Spots
Learn the secret histories, ancient myths, and proud traditions of Kerala at Kerala Folklore Museum, an original and varied cultural heritage institution. Started in 2009 as a nonprofit organization by a husband-and-wife team, the museum collects artifacts from across the state and throughout the centuries. The resulting narrative includes everything from Stone Age utensils to 20th-century musical instruments. Take a moment to appreciate the historical building itself--a composite of remnants from a 16th-century temple, wooden carvings from across the state, and parts of other traditional buildings. Nice mixture of architectural styles, easily accessible from Fort Kochin. Variety of artifacts; general atmosphere is a bit like a thrift store in that some item displays have a very hodgepodge feel. Volunteers are very pleasant and informative, with a true interest in preserving the culture of Kerala. Worth the trip.
This might be the most beautiful museum I've ever been to. All carved wood, housing centuries of Indian treasures. Costs extra to bring your camera but worth it. You can even buy some extra pieces for your home. I now own a lovely 18th century bronze Nandi that used to sit atop a temple post that I display proudly in my home. The sales support the museum so I feel doubly good.
Stuffed full of artefacts and ancient art and cultural pieces the museum is both informative and interesting. You can move through it at your own pace and take pictures of you pay the extra 100. It's a great place to while away an afternoon and pick up a few souvenirs
A very cool and quiet museum wih amazing displays. A bit rundown though. Staff is knowledgeable and courteous. Entry fee is 100 and photography is chargeable. A fine display of multiple Indian civilisations and some unique artifacts. Beautiful wooden construction is inviting.
