  • This is the oldest church here in Cochin (Kochi) and it kept the remains of Portuguese conqueror Vasco de Gama. Small church, simple, no images, nothing.  more »

  • Quite an experience seeing this small church in India, and for it to have such historical significance. If you can find the time it is worth the visit, and ensure you have a good guide who knows the history of this place too.
  • Historic church in India. First European Church built in India. Great landmark and a nice place of worship. Must visit while in Kochi.
  • Originally built in 1503 & is India's oldest European-built church. Originally built in 1503 & is India's oldest European-built church. The remains of Vasco da Gama were initially buried here before they were moved to Portugal.
  • Renovation work was going on when I visited in Nov. 2016. It was the first European church built in India. It hold a great importance in the pages of history.
  • The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 when he was on his third visit to India. His body was originally buried in this church, but after fourteen years his remains were removed to Lisbon. The gravestone of Vasco da Gama can still be seen here.
