Chinese Fishing Nets, Kochi (Cochin)

When in Kochi, make a short stop at Fort Kochi to admire Chinese Fishing Nets, representing an authentic fishing method and a landmark of the city. Although their name suggests Chinese heritage, the nets probably originate from Portuguese settlers who had colonies in Southern China. The unusual nets are fixed on bamboo or teak pillars and are lowered into the sea. Take a walk along the beach to admire the famous Kochi vista of the large, hammock-like nets appearing to float in mid-air, or purchase some of the fresh seafood being pulled out of the sea. • Very good attraction and a traditional way to catch fish. We have a net with bulb attached to its top which attracts fish, when the net is lifted we will get the fish in the net  more »
  • The nomenclature of Chinese fishing nets suggests that it has its origin in China. It was introduced by the Chinese explorer Zheng He. The Chinese fishing nets in Cochin Harbor were set up between...  more »
  • While the Chinese nets are beautiful, the area to approach them is dirty. If looking from far, they are excellent. You can also join the fishermen in hauling the catch.  more »

  • You can enjoy the sunset at this place. Really beautiful. One of the few places having these type of fishing nets. They are operational. Fishermen will show you how it works and also you can buy freshly caught fish from them. The place is easily accessible through buses and even ferries. The place has a walkway surrounded by huge trees. The place is colorful with vendors having beautiful products.
  • Had visited during an off-season period and the crowds were very less A quiet and calm place. Maintained well with clean surroundings. Some fishermen allow you onto the main fishing area, but do confirm before entering. Several local eateries and tea shops available. Definitely worth a visit, can spend almost an hour here.
  • The fishing nets themselves are amazing and worth a visit. Especially at sunset, they are an iconic frame. Those are usually surrounded by fishermen. Yet, the beach is covered with litter around the nets. This is so distracting and the experience diminishes completely as regards it.
  • Maybe the only place we get to see the old Chinese fishing nets. Some parts are now metal while most of it is still made of bamboo. You can watch how they're catching the fish 🐠 live and also buy the same at the same time. It's a unique experience to witness
  • Very dirty beach, litter, plastic, food and you name it scattered everywhere. Stray dogs feasting on everything remotely edible. 'Fishermen' only seem interested in ripping off tourists that wander onto their pier. To add to the apocalyptic scene two distant ugly oil refineries spoil what could be a good view. As it is this place is highly overrated and you will have to be very creative to get a good photo or a master of photoshop! Do yourself a favour and avoid, you haven't missed anything.
