Chinese Fishing Nets, Kochi (Cochin)

Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
3.2/5 based on 2,000+ reviews on the web
When in Kochi, make a short stop at Fort Kochi to admire Chinese Fishing Nets, representing an authentic fishing method and a landmark of the city. Although their name suggests Chinese heritage, the nets probably originate from Portuguese settlers who had colonies in Southern China. The unusual nets are fixed on bamboo or teak pillars and are lowered into the sea. Take a walk along the beach to admire the famous Kochi vista of the large, hammock-like nets appearing to float in mid-air, or purchase some of the fresh seafood being pulled out of the sea. Chinese Fishing Nets is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Kochi (Cochin) Edition.

  • The price was fair and it was generally good but I recommend to visit it in noon time the trip was for 14 km

  • Seeing the Chinese fishing nets decades ago, the last two visits have been less exciting. Nonetheless you must go see them. The fishermen in the past were more colorful, but now in my opinion they are...  read more »
  • In itself this sightseeing spot is very nice. The beach, the gulf and the fishing nets are all great, if ......... This spot is a big shame on the forehead of India. It is dirty beyond oblivion. The way the Indian people are treating this beach is horrific. There is garbage everywhere and really beyond reason. If I was minister of environment of India, I would put the mayor of Cochin to trial for treason and gross neglect. It is a really shame, this site is probably now damaged beyond repair.
  • the place is great.. but beware of locals asking for money.. first they invite u on their boats without telling u about the money. then if u dont give them money.. they crib about u and say crappy stuff.
  • One of the more incredible sights around Fort Kochi. You can go near the fishing nets and chances are they will actually ask you to join in the pulling of the ropes. Just such a sight to behold when they haul up the nets. The entire stretch has many fishing nets. Walk towards Fort Kochi beach (near the Dutch Cemetery) to explore.
  • A must-see for anyone visiting Kochi city. It's almost always on the agenda for anyone touring the city via travel agencies. Surroundings not very clean though.
  • Well worth a trip. Fishermen are waiting to 'catch tourists' with their nets but it's all good fun. Pay up your rupees and have a go hoisting the nets.
