Vembanad Lake, Kerala

4.6
#9 of 117 in Nature in Kerala
Take a houseboat ride on Vembanad Lake, the largest in Kerala. The lake forms part of a unique ecosystem called the "Kerala backwaters," where freshwater streams meet the salty Arabian sea, creating a labyrinth of brackish lakes, lagoons, rivers, and inlets that span over 900 km (560 mi). Take a guided boat trip and glide across the lagoon, spotting fields and meadows, rows of coconut palms and mangrove trees, and numerous species of birds. Enjoy the picturesque setting, have a picnic by the lakeshore, or try fishing in the plentiful waters. Using our world travel planner, Kumarakom attractions like Vembanad Lake can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • We visited the Lake with a House Boot ... two rooms and all the comforts. Experience definitely particular, picturesque and giving the chance to see and photograph the whole environment of the Lake. The House Boot are all very simili...la ns. for four people with a crew of three ... attentive service and decent food .... to try if you are in the area ... If you want to drink beer or wine ... you'll have to buy it at the drugstore before embarking ...

  • Quiet, well maintained, hygienic, friendly people, lovely sunsets, amazing boat rides. Only downside is people throwing plastic bottles in lake that sail through back waters and give an occasional dirty sight.
  • The Vembanad Lake is the heart of my village. Hundreds of fishermen here are getting their livelihood from this lake. Moreover, it is the top most place of attraction of tourists all over the world visiting India.
  • Big lake. Kumarakom, Alleppey and Pathiramanal island round trip took 9 hours by boat. Seeing Sunset from boat is wonderful. Private, Open air boat costs Rs.500/hour. We drunk tender coconut on the bank of the lake.
  • Great long lake and the house boat experience on this lake was amazing. We were on JCT houseboat and the lake was so long and the fresh water the view was so splendid. It was so cool and calm sailing
  • Kerala Aleppy backwaters, famous for boat race. Vast stretches of backwater, paddy fields, and birds. Better to opt for the day ride instead of staying at the house boat.

Where to stay in Kumarakom

Despite its heavy reliance on tourism, Kumarakom offers surprisingly few accommodations, with just a handful of resorts sitting near the lakeshore. You can find a larger selection of places to stay in Likkalam, a short drive to the south. If resorts fall outside your budget, look for small guesthouses and holiday rentals, which offer basic amenities and a friendly, comfortable atmosphere. No matter where you stay, you'll never be too far from the water, with many accommodations also offering swimming pools.
