Murudeshwara Temple, Karnataka
(4.6/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web)
See the second tallest statue of Shiva and the tallest gopuram (temple tower) on earth at Murudeshwara Temple. Sited on a hill rising over the Arabian Sea, the top of the 72 m (237 ft) tall tower offers magnificent views of the surroundings and the 37 m (123 ft) tall idol. Pass the two lifelike elephant statues that guard the entrance and climb the long flight of stairs to reach the idol. The bottom of the hill houses the holiest part of the complex--the Rameshwar lingam, which is said to be a piece of the original Atma-Linga. • The temple is well maintained. Good work by the management, the exterior of the temple is great and interior is greater than it. The fine carvings and designs are amazing, the metal work etc. There are guideways to manage the crowd of people. You get enough time to admire the beauty of temple. The air gets cooler in the evening. In the surrounding area there are snacks stalls and the place has boating and jet ski service too at the beach adjacent.
  • Wow, Just wow!!! A place where Devotion and Entertainment co exists. A place for all ages. A sacred place with puranic significance. You go visit the temple, offer the prayers, stay blessed. You come out of the temple and go to the beach and go for boat ride, surfing, swimming etc. Waters are a bit brownish near the coast but bluish as you go further inside the sea on a boat. This temple has one of the tallest temple towers in India and there is a lift facility to reach the top and enjoy the majestic beach view. A MUST VISIT place. Go for it!!
  • One of the most magnificent Shiva statue which is well maintained. The management works really well in controlling the crowd and making arrangement for the devotees to pray. The cave underneath is really nice and gives knowledge about the history of gokarna and the temples located there.
