See the second tallest statue of Shiva and the tallest gopuram (temple tower) on earth at Murudeshwara Temple. Sited on a hill rising over the Arabian Sea, the top of the 72 m (237 ft) tall tower offers magnificent views of the surroundings and the 37 m (123 ft) tall idol. Pass the two lifelike elephant statues that guard the entrance and climb the long flight of stairs to reach the idol. The bottom of the hill houses the holiest part of the complex--the Rameshwar lingam, which is said to be a piece of the original Atma-Linga. • Murudeshwara (another name of Lord Siva) Temple is a famous Lord Siva temple. The temple is surrounded by the Arabian sea on three sides. The Murudeshwar beach has two beautiful temples with majestic statues. This town is famous for the world’s second tallest Lord Shiva statue and Murudeshwar Temple that has a 20-storey high Gopura guarded by two life-size concrete elephants, 249 feet tall is considered the tallest Gopura in the world. It was constructed in its present form by the businessman and philanthropist R. N. Shetty. Huge towering statue of Lord Shiva, which is visible from afar. The statue is 123 feet in height and it took about 2 years to build.
  • Temple of Shri Mahadev is in the form of Shivaling. It is mentioned that the Shivaling at Murudeshwar is a piece of Atmaling at Gokarna. When Ravana could not uproot the Shivaling , he threw pieces of it. Those places came to be known by various names such as Sajjeshwar, Guneshwar, Sadashiv , Murudeshwar,.. etc. The present temple is built around Murudeshwar. Beautifully constructed and maintained, the location of temple at a pristine sea shore makes it wonderful place to be visiting. Plenty of accommodation, eateries, sea beach, water sports makes it easy to visit and stay.
