Religious Site
Admire ancient gompas and exquisite silk embroidery murals at Lamayuru Monastery (Yuru Gompa), a Tibetan Buddhist monastery complex perched atop a huge rock. Cut in the hillside at 3,510 m (11,520 ft), the monastery offers fabulous views of the surrounding snow-capped Lamayuru Mountains and Indus River. Founded by Naropa in the early 11th century, the complex once housed 400 monks. Impressive murals inside the complex show a blend of Tibetan and Indian art and you will see many butter lamps and elaborate carpets in well-preserved ancient meditation cavities. Ornate frescoes and numerous intensely colored statues adorn its richly decorated halls. Our Kargil trip itinerary planner makes visiting Lamayuru Monastery (Yuru Gompa) and other Kargil attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Amazing landscape around the monastery. It's called moon land too....
  • I live in Mumbai..but whenever I hear about this monastery i feel the freshness that would be in heaven. Given a choice I can stay in this place for as many days as possible. It is a abode of peace and thus very serene..very close to nature and since this is an old monastery the atmosphere here is fully charged with the holy rhymes and mantra.. Its one of the oldest monasteries in this area aging around 1000 year old build in around 9th century AD..
  • Well love I love Ladakh and each everything that connects to it. Lamayuru was built in 11th century and still home of many Monks and school for children. follow on insta @thackeray_jr
  • Great place to drive from Leh. Its 120 kms from Leh. Takes about 5-6 hours of bike drive. Road after Alchi isn't great. Monastery is historic. Road to the monastery is very steep
  • Lamayuru also known as the moonland of Leh
