Bhagavathy Amman Temple, Kanyakumari

4.2
#2 of 10 in Historic Sites in Kanyakumari
You can’t take any photographs at Bhagavathy Amman Temple, but you will surely remember everything you see. Built right at the edge of the water, where the three seas--the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea--meet, the temple and the area are considered sacred. Marvel at a natural phenomenon; at the point where the bodies of water meet, you can distinguish between three colors of water, none of which mix with each other. See the statue of the Goddess Bhagavathy Amman, whose nose rings reflect the light of the surrounding oil lamps and used to act as a makeshift lighthouse for sailors. Pay attention to the temple's modest dress code. • Very old temple, dark inside, you'll feel as if you've entered a cave. But once you see the goddess you'll forget everything. Main attraction here is the nose stud of the goddess which is so shiny and bright. Legend says it use to be light house for sailors, but the brightness of the stud blinded them. So even today the front door of the temple facing sea is always closed and you've to enter the temple through East door.
  • Very old closed dark temple. Speed Darshan is 20 rupees per person. Lotuses 10 rupees each. They do not seem to put the lotuses at the deity’s feet. Shirts to be removed by men. Temple open times on the picture
  • Nice temple. Entry fee is RS 20. Visitors are mostly tourists as local churches have converted most of native population to Christianity.
  • Before and after sunrise you can get blessing , after sunrise heavy crowd will be there. Nice Temple
  • An excellent example of ancient temple construction...in the sea shore in kaniyakumari near triveni sangamam ..a scenic place...one gate is facing the sea...there is a myth that earlier the door was opened all time and in night the light from the nose stud of Devi Idol make ships lost control and they hit on rocks and break....
