Ekambareswarar Temple, Kanchipuram

Intricately crafted sculptures adorn the massive structure of Ekambareswarar Temple all the way to the top. Walk through the gate beneath the 59 m (193.5 ft) gopuram (tower), to enter the mandapa, where public rituals such as weddings take place. Explore the 9.3 hectare (23 acre) grounds, with a thousand-pillared pavilion and five courtyards, each with its own character. Look out for the 3,500-year-old sthala-virutcham, or temple tree, whose four branches reputedly bear four types of mango.
