Thirunelli Temple, Kalpetta

4.4
#1 of 7 in Historic Sites in Wayanad District
Trek through thick forest to reach Thirunelli Temple, an ancient, isolated site sitting at 900 m (3,000 ft) above sea level. The route to the temple winds through a wildlife sanctuary with plenty of opportunities to spot the local residents. Small streams, ponds, waterfalls, and an old stone aqueduct pulling in water from a nearby spring contribute to the harmonious nature of the temple's surroundings. The pilgrimage site, dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu, is believed to be more than 1,000 years old, with remains of ancient villages uncovered in the nearby forests. • Very old temple. Unfortunately we reached around 2 PM and the temple was shut. The drive to the temple was through a forested area. We saw a bison. The temple itself is very old fashioned and has intricate designs on its walls. Red tiled roof. very quiet and serene. There is a pathway which leads to a pond and further up to a Ganesha statue surrounded by thick vegetation. Be sure to visit these two spots as well. There is ample parking space right next to the temple. There is also some food joints nearby. Check the timings and plan well.
  • A very divine and unforgettable experience. The ambiance and surrounding areas of the temple is so beautiful. The God is divine and you can keep seeing him. They have dress code for both men and women. However it is not very strict. The temple is not approachable by wheelchair. It is also not very disabled friendly. Parking is available and charge are reasonable.
  • One of the oldest Vishnu Temple in Kerala. It is situated midst of the forest. Beautiful scenery. Be sure to be there and leave before dark as wild animals may enter the roads. Never tease them if at all you find any. We feel like we are centuries back in our life.
  • M not a religious person. Went there for my ma. More than the temple I liked the walk to its papanashini lill pond. The trail is quite, and pretty. It is worth a visit to sit around that trail for sometime
  • Very nice temple.. its in the middle of forrest.. rituals related to spiritually here.. it will be a nice experience if u visit the place in December- January months.. you can also watch monkey, elephant, peacock etc.. surely it wil be a wonderful experience..
