  • The numerous villages of Shekhawati are the ancestral homes of some of the great industrial families in India, Birla and Goenk. These spacious, ancient havelis, with lush frescoes on the walls, built between late 18th-century and early 20th merchants local marwaris, who had migrated to the port cities of Bombay and Calcutta in search of fortune. Their interaction with the British and exposure to urban and industrial trends influenced their lifestyle, becoming the reflection of their new ideas, wealth and social position that returned their homes. The style and content of the frescos reflect the process of urbanization of a traditional genre. Local artists kept the one-dimensional realism of traditional rajput painting, but mixed among the gods, goddesses and heroes of war, images of a changing world. In his tribute to the contemporary world, the frescoes of British ladies, gentlemen with Hat, music bands and soldiers, trains, cars, planes, gramophones and telephones symbolize the emerging industry of late 19th century society.

  • These houses sogn. Havelis, were probably very nicely decorated long ago. Unimpressive from the outside in (then) very nice residential courtyards.
