Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli, Jaisalmer

3.0
#7 of 18 in Historic Sites in Jaisalmer
Visit a building commissioned to serve as the residence of the Prime Minister of Jaisalmer, Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli, and learn about the Rajasthan history and architecture of the late 19th century. Take a guided tour of this private residence and find out details about the building and its residents. The story goes that two brothers started building different facets of the building simultaneously and thus the building came up with irregular shape. In spite of that, this haveli is considered to be the best in Jaisalmer with its grandeur. See the two statues of elephants made of yellow stone made by the brothers which guard the house. • The owner of this building is the most unfriendly person I've ever met. For going in the building you must buy something in the shop and you are not allowed to have a look. I spoke just 10 seconds with my mate and the owner told me that if I want to speak, I have to go on the street and if don't buy something, I should leave immediately the place. The facade is wonderful.

  • Well its good to see but this place is residential place. So you can't see much. As u know shops are everywhere in india. So they also have shop in side home.
  • Lol! Some family is already staying out there and people outside are clicking pictures. Story surrounding it is cool. Two friends, two architects divides the allocated facade into two equal halves and start designing and building their own half part. Result ended up into a facade in which Left part is similar but designed different altogether with the right one. Haveli is beautiful, no doubt at that and thankfully no ticket price as well for clicking pictures from outside. Good for those studying architecture. It's nearby Patwa ki Haveli so you can visit it for capturing pictures. :-)
  • Beautiful Haveli of Diwan Nathmal made in 1885. In fact it was a gift of King Berisal of Jaisalmer to his minister Diwan Nathmal. Still in use by descendants of Diwan. Carvings are beautiful. Said to have been designed & made by two architects - one of whom started from left & the other from right. Two elephants carved in stone stand there signifying high social status of Diwan. No parking area. Pics can be taken from outside. Opens 9 in the morning. Close to famous Patwa Havelis.
