Head to Maharaja's Palace to see part of one of the world's largest foritifications and a World Heritage Site. Built in 1156 CE, it stands tall in the center of city, rising out of the sands of the Thar Desert. The palace's yellow sandstone facade turns from tawny to golden as the sun sets. Measuring 460 m (1,500 ft) long, 230 m (750 ft) wide, and 76 m (250 ft) high, it also features a daunting defensive wall. Where to stay in Jaisalmer

A popular tourist destination with a wealth of attractions, Jaisalmer boasts a number of accommodations to meet the needs of its domestic and international visitors. The district around Sadar Bazar features a large number of options, with simple sandstone hotels and guesthouses complemented by the odd high-end alternative. Look closer to the fort to find the more storied and luxurious options in town, with many rooms offering extensive views of the desert city's most famous architectural highlights.
