Underground Temple, Hampi
(3.4/5 based on 60+ reviews on the web)
Unearthed by archeologists in the 1980s, Underground Temple represents one of the oldest of the World Heritage-listed Hampi monuments. Dedicated to one of Shiva's incarnations and possibly built to serve the royal family during private ceremonies, the temple dates back to the 14th century. With several sections below ground level, the temple includes a number of key areas submerged under water during the wet season. While this prevents visitors from exploring the entire structure, local worshipers of Shiva consider the water sacred. Notice the temple's simple, austere pillars, which lack the carved details found at most other shrines at Hampi. With our online itinerary creator, Hampi attractions like Underground Temple can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Beautiful temple. We could not enter all the way into the temple since there was a lot of water inside. The place had a very mysterious and eerie atmosphere with bats flying around. Loved it.
  • Great experience, the temple is located a level below the regular ground level. There is always water inside the temple which is very cool. Though the place might stink a bit due to the bats, but nice to see the lord shiva.
  • Nice underground Shiva temple. Lots of bats inside and is bound to smell. You can go upto a certain point underground.
  • It's amazing underground temple is partially filled with water inside. It's very exclusive place because it's source of water inside is from the earth itself, not an artificial source.
  • Not so great llace to visit in Hampi
