Stepped Tank, Hampi

4.5
Appreciate the geometric perfection of Stepped Tank--a part of the Hampi World Heritage Site that has never required even the slightest restoration. This giant, drain-free tank fed by an aqueduct boasts elaborate decorations across five tiers, the lowest of which is 7 m (23 ft) deep. Historians believe skilled carvers cut each block of green diorite at another site, before moving and assembling them within the fortified section of the Hampi complex. Adjacent to this unique water structure you can see another tank, which served as a bathing area for the queen and her royal attendants. • The stepped will with near perfect symmetry is a sight to behold. It was a gory sight to imagine the hundreds of skulls that were uncovered during the excavations.  more »

  • In the middle of Hampi you find this well crafted & beautifully made water storage tank. The skill & the Planning of this is appreciable.
  • It was very interesting to see how these reservoirs were made and planned. I wonder how it would have been now if they were maintained for functional purpose and not just for tourism. Indian monuments and architecture always amazes.
  • Beautiful structure in the heart of hampi. Unfortunately there was no water when we came here. One can admire the art and skill of the people who build the tank.
  • It's a beautiful place. Very well maintained. This tank was a special bathink place only for the royals. It received river water directly from the canals. The stones are supposed to make the water bacteria free and they were marked with numbers so that the tank could be assembled somewhere else in the exact same way. It is located in the area that is called the 'royal enclosure'. So if you visit here you can see many other sites.
  • I am not much into visiting historical sites but still i went there because Hampi is a world Heritage site and is notorious for its architecture. I knew I will like it for its uniqueness. Also known as PUSHKARNI. It has got a great architecture which is amazing for photography. Happy travel! :)
