Purandaradasa Mantapa, Hampi

4.7
#14 of 19 in Historic Sites in Hampi
Pay homage to a celebrated poet at Purandaradasa Mantapa, one of the smallest structures found within the World Heritage Site of Hampi. Built to honor Purandara Dasa, a legendary 16th-century poet who spent most of his life at Hampi, this little columnated pavilion sits on the banks of the Tungabhadra River and hosts annual music events. Purandara Dasa often sat on the edge of the river, working on his compositions and drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscape. Experts believe the poet composed over 75,000 songs, many of which remain a living part of Karnataka's music heritage. Picturesque, serene and calm place in Hampi, very close to the flowing Tungabadra river. The mantapa has been built in memory of Purandara Dasa - the great composer and guru of carnatic classical music who lived in the 15th-16th century. The mantapa is not situated on main walking road to Vittala temple, a minor diversion is needed to take the pathway towards the river. The mantapa also gives an excellent view of the Anjanadri Hills. Great place to spend an early morning or an evening, very close to nature. Must-Visit !

Purandara mantapa is the site you could get closest to nature, in Hampi. You can continuously listen to the murmuring river and the birds sing. It's best visited during early hours, between 5.30 and 8 am. Also, do not forget the little statue of Purandara dasa carved into one of the pillars in the mantapa

Where to stay in Hampi

You'll find a number of simple guesthouses and homestays located in Hampi itself, primarily in the Hampi Bazaar district. North and south of the river, they offer comfortable rooms in modest former residential buildings. Further afield, a selection of more upmarket resorts and hotels sit on the banks of the river and the nearby lake to the northwest. Many visitors choose to stay in Hosapete, to the southwest, or the small town of Kamalapur, located just south of Hampi. Both offer a greater range of accommodations than Hampi, including hotels, resorts, and hostels.
