Purandaradasa Mantapa, Hampi

4.7
Pay homage to a celebrated poet at Purandaradasa Mantapa, one of the smallest structures found within the World Heritage Site of Hampi. Built to honor Purandara Dasa, a legendary 16th-century poet who spent most of his life at Hampi, this little columnated pavilion sits on the banks of the Tungabhadra River and hosts annual music events. Purandara Dasa often sat on the edge of the river, working on his compositions and drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscape. Experts believe the poet composed over 75,000 songs, many of which remain a living part of Karnataka's music heritage. • This is a small open pillared pavilion with whitewashed top dedicated to the legendary poet Purandaradasa who lived in Hampi. The pavilion is located at the river shore near Vittala Temple. This is one of the areas at Hampi where people perform religious rituals. The pavilion is almost at the edge of the river that during monsoon the river water touches the platform or even submerges it. Probably it is here the poet would have sat and composed the devotional songs. Even today the songs composed by him are sung at the Carnatic music (the south Indian classical music) concerts. It is believed that he has composed more than 75,000 classical compositions. They were carried over generations by the oral tradition. But today only a about a thousand or so are known to exist. A small sclpture of Purandaradasa with tambura ( an ancient stringed musical instrument ) can be seen at the pavillion. Every year a classical music concert is held in this area to celebrate the birth aniversary of this poet. Usually they are held for 2-3 days during the months of January or February. Musicians of national and international repute participate.
  • Historically it’s a known fact that the great 'Father of Carnatic music' - Sri Purandara Dasa, composed songs while he was in Vijayanagara and he sang in the Durbar of King Krishnadevaraya. This mantapa has been erected on the banks of River Tungabhadra and it is dedicated to Sri Purandara Dasa and there is his statue inside.
