Matanga Hill, Hampi

4.7
#1 of 6 in Parks in Hampi
A rustic stone stairway leads up Matanga Hill, culminating in one of the most memorable views imaginable. The vista spreads 360 degrees across the lush valley of banana plantations, with tall palm trees contrasting against rocky hills, and ancient ruins scattered across the scene. Admire Achyuta Raya’s Temple complex to the east, the river to the north, the historic city of Hampi in the west, and the winding cart trail leading south. Time your arrival right and you could enjoy a colorful sunset or crisp sunrise from atop the hill. • The best sunrise place you will have in south India as far as I am aware. I witnessed sunrise twice here back to back days. You will get a heavenly feeling. The most beautiful scenery during sunrise. It takes 10-15mins to trek up the hill. The slope is very steep and the steps are most of the times rocks. So one has to be very careful while climbing up and down. But it’s worth the view. Old age people please be careful while climbing and someone has to be with them to guide. Really a breathtaking and wonderful experience visiting Hampi.
  • Nice trek. Locals believe that climbing this hill and inhaling the pure air on top increases your life time by 6 days. Either climb t during sunset or during sunrise. There are 3 routes to climb. All are equally difficult. One can typically spend about 1-2 hrs on top. For and average climber it takes upto 1hr minimum to reach the top.
  • With in life span you have to visit it were we get fresh air. Entire hampi is visible if we climb up the hill.
  • This is the place to be for a sunset view in Hampi. There are two routes to get to the top of the hill one from the main bazaar street and one from behind the Achyutraya temple. No matter what route you choose it is suggested to get down quickly after sunset.
  • A few step about 100-150 m high hill with small temple at top & 360 view of whole around area. Must care about safety because some of step have no any safety railing to hold it. It is more like tracking & climbing then steps

Where to stay in Hampi

You'll find a number of simple guesthouses and homestays located in Hampi itself, primarily in the Hampi Bazaar district. North and south of the river, they offer comfortable rooms in modest former residential buildings. Further afield, a selection of more upmarket resorts and hotels sit on the banks of the river and the nearby lake to the northwest. Many visitors choose to stay in Hosapete, to the southwest, or the small town of Kamalapur, located just south of Hampi. Both offer a greater range of accommodations than Hampi, including hotels, resorts, and hostels.
