Hemakuta Hill Temple Complex, Hampi

#11 of 49 in Things to do in Hampi
Visit the southern section of the Hampi World Heritage Site to see Hemakuta Hill Temple Complex, home to several shrines predating most other structures within the important archeological locality. While some of the oldest ruins on this hill date back to the 10th century, others were added after the establishment of the Vijayanagara Empire and include fortified walls designed to protect the area from potential invaders. Pay special attention to the monumental sculptures representing Narasimha, an incarnation of Vishnu as a man-lion. In addition to its historical and architectural significance, the hill also serves as an ideal lookout point, providing sweeping views over the ancient capital's bazaar. • Wonderful view at the top of the hill. Hemakuta hill is adjacent to Virupaksha temple. Trek to the top is very easy compared to Matanga hill or Anjanadri hill. The hillock has many Jain temples also a beautiful sunset point. At the other end of the hill, you can find Sasivekalu Ganesha idol and continue further to Sri Krishna temple.
