Balakrishna Temple, Hampi
(5/5 based on 30 reviews on the web)
See carvings of ten incarnations of Vishnu at Balakrishna Temple, added in 1513 to the monuments of the World Heritage-listed Hampi complex. Constructed to celebrate the Vijayanagara Empire's military victory and annexation of an eastern kingdom, the temple honors Lord Bala Krishna, an incarnation of Krishna as an infant. The surrounding temple complex features a number of smaller shrines and pillared halls graced with intricate carvings. West of the main temple stands a rectangular structure that probably served as a granary. Just behind it, look for a narrow stairway: climb it to the top of the temple and enjoy panoramic views of the entire complex.
