Jai Vilas Palace, Gwalior
Categories: Specialty Museums, Museums
Appreciate the luxurious life of Indian royalty at Jai Vilas Palace. Built in 1874, architect Sir Michael Filose combined different European styles--Tuscan, Italian-Doric, and Corinthian--to achieve the palace's grandiose aesthetic. See the exquisite Durbar hall, decorated with gilt and gold furniture and featuring monumental crystal chandeliers, which hang from the ornate golden ceilings. Well-maintained rooms, including the king and queen's rooms, display the royal family's lifestyle, making it quite easy to imagine how a Maharajah must have lived. Keep an eye out for the palace's railway track, with a train carrying decanters and cigars for the guests.
