Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Guwahati

(4.2/5 based on 180 reviews on the web)
Take an elephant ride through India’s rhino heartland at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, a national reserve famous for its dense population of the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros. This swampy marshland spanning some 38 sq km (14.7 sq mi) also provides habitats for leopards, buffalos, wild boar, muntjacs, civets, and over 375 bird species. You can also take a jeep safari along some of the sanctuary's few roads for the chance to enjoy close-up views of magnificent animals. Aside from spotting rhinos, the area offers great bird-watching opportunities, with populations of Indian pied horn bills, ospreys, hill mynas, kalij pheasants, and over 2,000 migratory birds. • Could not visit Kaziranga ? Don't worry.Visit here to watch the rhinos moving here and there like cows & buffaloes. You will get a lot both from this forest through elephant ride & jeep ride.
  • We chose of visiting Pobitora against Kaziranga because of 2 reasons - You have leave previous night from Guwahati and stay at Kaziranga, if you have to do early morning safari on elephant back. Kazir...  more »

  • Best place to see Great One Horned Rhino. The state animal of Assam. This is a place for aquatic birds.
  • It is not far from Guwahati. One can see one horned rhinos from very near. Apart from rhinos the sanctuary attractions are deer, different type of reptiles and enormous varieties of beautiful birds. One can hire jeep of elephant to visit the sanctuary.
  • Road from Highway to Pobitora is very poor but via Chandrapur is good...
  • Very nice place. One must visit. One horn rhinos are seen very clearly and also varieties of birds cone from other countries as said by the rangers. For elephant safari one need to reach early morning say like by 5am
  • Bad experience of going there. We went there on 9 October 2016 during Durga Puja. The sanctuary has reopened just on 1st October 2016. Since rainy seasons were still on so the sanctuary was closed. No jeep tour was available. And the roads from NH27 to Pobitora was too bad. Overall not recommended place to go in October/rainy season.
