#1 of 20 in Parks in Assam
Take an elephant ride through India’s rhino heartland at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, a national reserve famous for its dense population of the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros. This swampy marshland spanning some 38 sq km (14.7 sq mi) also provides habitats for leopards, buffalos, wild boar, muntjacs, civets, and over 375 bird species. You can also take a jeep safari along some of the sanctuary's few roads for the chance to enjoy close-up views of magnificent animals. Aside from spotting rhinos, the area offers great bird-watching opportunities, with populations of Indian pied horn bills, ospreys, hill mynas, kalij pheasants, and over 2,000 migratory birds. A visit to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Guwahati trip itinerary planner to plot your vacation.

  • If you want to get up close to the rhinos, this IS THE PLACE. With the highest density of one-horned rhinos, you are guaranteed to see them from close. Kids loved the sway of the elephant safari. MAKE...  more »
  • We chose Pobitora over Kaziranga as we were short on time. Kaziranga is about 4 hour drive from Guwahati and as the best time to go into the sanctuary is early morning, you need at least 2 days to do ...  more »

  • Good place to spot one horn rhinoceros if you don't want to go Kaziranga. But I couldn't feel the thrill of the wildlife even though we could spot 2-3 rhino's. They were either far away from the Jeep or hiding behind the bushes. Person operating the Jeep was quite along the journey. Felt like the traveling efforts were not worth the scenery we observed.
  • Not that much to see here. Fares are quite high. There is a Jeep ride which is charged 1300 for one hour. Only rhinos to see in that ride and fields are like any village area. There is a hanging bridge though and view on hanging bridge is awesome. It's a good place for photographs.
  • Four stars for the views, not for the staff... But the guide and d driver who went with us was not at all co operative. They were unable to answer basic questions like area of the range, name of few common birds etc. Be sure to arrange a guide who can atleast answer some basic questions...
  • Natural wild life sanctuary habitating rhinos and other animals. One can enjoy it with open safari jeep available at the sanctuary on rent.
  • It is not up to the mark due to weak authority that controls the sanctuary. No protection for the animals during the flood season, the animals lose their lives in search of shelter. The phto below is during the flood when the road was under the flood water and we have to cross ferries.

Where to stay in Guwahati

Most accommodations in Guwahati lie close to the main train station in the Paltan Bazaar district. Here, you'll find some particularly refined options next to the river in the Fancy Bazaar area, offering extensive views of the water and access to some of the main sights in town. Look to the mazy side streets of the Paltan Bazaar district for some budget-friendly guesthouses and hostels. The main Guwahati-Shillong Road has a good choice of hotels, with some budget and luxury options available. The road offers a degree of convenience for those who want to get out and explore the hillier areas of the region.
