(4.6/5 based on 2,000+ reviews on the web)
Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and picturesque scenery of Tsomgo Lake, a sacred body of water nestled at 3,753 m (12,313 ft) in the Himalayan mountains. Take a drive up from Gangtok to the lake area, and admire the scenic surroundings along the way, or enjoy a ride around the lake on a colorfully decorated yak. In summer and fall, you’ll encounter colorful alpine flowers, such as rhododendrons and primulas, around the azure, oval lake, while in the winter you’ll find the lake frozen and the area covered in snow. To visit the lake, you’ll need to obtain a permit from the tourist information center. Tsomgo Lake is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Gangtok Edition.

  • A typical picture perfect Lake with a view of the mountains. You can pose for with the brightly decorated Yaks!
  • A beautiful high altitude lake that's easily accessible from Gangtok. It is a tiny lake although. The access road is rough but totally worth the trouble. It was a 7.5 hour round trip for us including ...  more »
  • Having traveled to Ladakh and seen the Pangong, everything else looks pale. I was not too impressed as the place was too crowded. Can easily be skipped if you have the choice.

  • A beautiful, pollution free lake, about 40 km from Gangtok and at an altitude is about 12,500 ft. . A winding road through rugged mountain terrain and sharp cliffs takes you to Tsomgo, which means source of the water in Bhutia language. The lake derives its water from the melting snows of the mountains surrounding the lake. Of legendary beauty, the lake looks different at different seasons. In winter the placid lake remains frozen with the area around it covered in snow while in late spring the profusion of flowers in bloom adds a riot of colours around the lake.
  • Tsomgo also know as Changu lake, i visited on Dec 24th 2015, our tour to Nathula Pass and Tsomgo lake was done by Lama tours. Lake is considered to be holy by locals, there are yak rides available near the lake.
  • Changu lake is about 2-3 hrs from Gangtok and 20Km before Nathula Pass. The lake is very beautiful and we also got snowfall :-) ,The road is OK for SUV which needs to be reserved from Gangtok(6-7 people can comfortably sit in one vehicle). The road is winding so people suffering from motion sickness needs to be careful(Eat very light before journey).Leave by 8 in the morning as the lake may be closed at around 2PM.We couldnt go upto Nathula becoz the road was closed.Try to include both places on the same day. Special permits are required and ONLY INDIAN citizen are allowed in both the places.2 Passport photos and 1 copy of ID proof is needed at Gangtok for the pass. The driver can arrange the pass easily. We paid Rs3000 for Bolero for upto Changu Lake(it can be cheaper/costlier depending on season(May-June)). Heavy Jacket/Snow Gloves/Snow Boots are available at the lake site on Rent.Snow Boot and Gloves are necessary,If you have Good jacket then the heavy Jacket is optional. The places is not very suitable for aged people as there is quite a bit of stairs at high Altitude(12400ft).
  • It was raining when I went, yet a very beautiful lake with all colourful yaks around.
  • Good place to view. Dont miss the Yak ride. However it is little costly. They start from Rs.450 in off season and in season time it goes till Rs.900. In off season you can negotiate and bring it to Rs.250.
