Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir, Gangtok

4.3
#3 of 59 in Things to do in Gangtok
Visit a holy place high up in the mountains at Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir, built to honor a 27-year-old soldier who died while posted close to the Sino-Indian border. Singh's death in 1968 has remained the subject of myth and spiritual belief: the official version suggests that he was killed during a skirmish on a mountain pass between Tibet and Sikkim, but others state that he perished in a glacier. Legend has it that he visited one of his colleagues in a dream and asked him to build a shrine here in his memory. The shrine has become a moving tribute and a place of pilgrimage, particularly for service personnel. A nice place in high altitude. A small cafe run by govt officials is too good to spend some time. You should visit near Siva Temple and waterfalls.

It's the newly built mandir of harbabhajan Singh. The actual bunker of his is at higher altitude. Do carry oxygen,as I experienced breathing problem in the month of December. To avoid it, don't rush or be in hurry. Take your time to go around, walk slowly.
