Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chisti, Fatehpur Sikri

3.8
#4 of 13 in Things to do in Fatehpur Sikri
One of the most highly regarded examples of Mughal architecture in the country, Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chisti serves as the final resting place of the Sufi saint. Devotees visit the graceful 16th-century tomb to request blessings from the saint, tying a signifying thread to the marble screens that enclose the building so their wishes will not be forgotten. Admire the intricately carved edifice, adorned with arabesques and selections from the Koran, and the plinth's yellow and black mosaics. Note that women will have to wear a scarf on their head to enter, and all visitors must remove their shoes. Wear socks so as not to burn your feet on the sun scorched ground. • Nice religious place. Be extremely careful with scamsters asking to buy shawl to lay over the tomb. Really annoying hawkers all around. Authorities could do a better job of controlling this place.
  • Amazing place wonderful location with nice architecture, the tomb of Salim Chisthi. Devotees come here to worship and seek the blessings at this tomb. It is said that the wishes in the minds of the devotees do get fulfilled for having visited this place of worship.
  • The Tomb of Sheikh Salim Christi [pronounced as chisti] is famed as one of the finest examples of Mughal architecturein India, built during the years 1580 and 1581, along with the imperial complex at Fatehpur Sikri near Zenana Rauza and facing south towards Buland Darwaza, within the quadrangle of the Jama Masjid which measures 350 ft. by 440 ft. It enshrines the burial place of the Sufi saint, Salim Chisti(1478 – 1572), a descendant of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer, and who lived in a cavern on the ridge at Sikri. The mausoleum, constructed by Akbar as a mark of his respect for the Sufi saint, who foretold the birth of Akbar's son, who was named Prince Salim after the Sufi Saint and later succeeded Akbar to the throne of the Mughal Empire, as Jahangir.
  • Great saint having great tomb.Superb architecture of the "JAALI" inside tomb behaves like a mirror.
  • Fatehpur Sikri is a town in the Agra District of Uttar Pradesh, India. The city was founded in the year 1569 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, and served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585, when it was abandoned. After his military victories over Chittor and Ranthambore, Akbar decided to shift his capital from Agra to a new location 23 miles (37 km) south-west, to honour the Sufi saint Salim Chishti. Here, he commenced the construction of a planned walled city, which took the next fifteen years in planning and construction, with a series of royal palaces, harem, courts, a mosque, private quarters and other utility buildings. He named the city Fatehabad, with Fateh, a word of Arabic origin in Persian, meaning "victorious." It was later called Fatehpur Sikri. It is at Fatehpur Sikri that the legends of Akbar and his famed courtiers, the nine jewels or Navaratnas, were born. Fatehpur Sikri is one of the best preserved examples of Mughal architecture in India.
