St. Paul's Church, Diu

4.1
#3 of 7 in Historic Sites in Diu
Marvel at intricately carved walls and light a candle at St. Paul's Church, a mesmerizing colonial-style Portuguese church. Completed in 1610 by Jesuits and reconstructed in 1807, the church has an impressive Baroque façade painted white, making it one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in India. Massive, elaborately carved wooden doors, paneled wooden furniture, and an image of Mary carved from a single piece of Burmese teak fill its spacious interior, which can accommodate around 250 people. The still-active church, dedicated to Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, also features an exquisite 400-year-old pulpit. • St. Paul's Church is situated at walking distance from diu fort.It is the most peaceful place of Diu.  more »
  • This is a nice historical Catholic Church, from the 1600’s. The only negative side is the failing care of the facility and the pigeons flying around the sanctuary.  more »
  • The Church completed in Portuguese style and perfectly preserved since the residence of the Portuguese in the Indian city of Diu. Wonderful Church looks in night illumination. Walls are painted in pure white colour and brightly stand out in the darkness of the night. The church operates. Every weekend church services are held in the Church for Catholics. The Interior of the Church is distinguished by modesty and simplicity. No golden paintings and delights. I think this is correct. However, the cleanliness of the premises to be desired. Birds flying inside spoil the atmosphere and create noise and smell.

Where to stay in Diu

In the main town of Diu, you'll find a number of mid-range and budget hotels close to the water, and a few more atmospheric, old colonial buildings converted into hotels and guesthouses along the streets further inland. If looking for beachside luxury, take a peak at Ghoghla and Nagoa beaches, with each of these stretches of sandy coastline housing a set of resorts, with onsite pools, restaurants, air-conditioned rooms, and spas. Make sure to reserve your room in advance, particularly around festival time, as Diu really isn't that big and can get overwhelmed with visitors.
