4.7
#12 of 57 in Historic Sites in Chennai (Madras)
Admire elaborate stucco figures at Marundeeswarar Temple, an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Believed to have been built sometime in the seventh century CE, the temple was widely expanded by Chola kings in the 11th century and now features two seven-tiered gate towers with countless colorful sculptures. Its main hall boasts a Somaskanda image of Shiva surrounded by 36 massive, elegantly carved pillars. Spanning about 0.4 ha (1 ac), the temple yard has two large tanks with a golden-colored shrine in the middle of the water. Pilgrims flock here to worship Shiva and seek blessings to protect against diseases. Amazing great, ancient temple of Lord Shiva. It has two entrances one on East and another on the west side. Sanctum Sanctorium and Lord Shiva is facing West on this temple. There is a very nice Pond on the east side within the Temple premises and a very large Pond on the NE corner outside the temple. On SW, the Sthala Vriksham is believed to be where Lord Shiva appeared twice. Flowers and Pooja items are available near the East gate entrance. Amazing temple one would sure fall in love with the affection of the God and Goddess here!

It is a great temple for Lord Shiva built by a Sozha king. While being here, I feel so proud to be a Tamizhan. The temple architectures and the environment remains the same even after the tsunami and tornadoes. I felt this might be a minor work of the scholars and architects those days. But now nobody can build a temple like this.
