Admire elaborate stucco figures at gopurams of Marundeeswarar Temple, an ancient and very powerful Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Believed to have been built sometimes in the 7th century, the temple was widely expanded by Chola kings in the 11th century, featuring now two huge seven tiered gate towers with countless colorful sculptures. Its main hall features Somaskanda image of Shiva surrounded by 36 massive elegantly carved pillars. Spanning about 0.4 hectares (1 acres), the temple yard has two large tanks with a golden colored shrine in the middle of the water. Pilgrims flock here to worship Shiva and seek blessing against diseases and lectures are given daily. Dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lord Marundeeswarar is known so because he imparted sage Agastya on curative properties of various herbs and plants. Since then the Marundeeswarar temple has been a place of worship for people with diseases and various problems with their health. It is said that even The Sage Valmiki, who wrote The Ramayana, came here to The Marundeeswarar temple to worship The Lord. Sage Valmiki was said to be blessed here. After this incident, this place was to be known as Thiruvalmikiyur, the name gradually became Thiruvanmiyur.
