Mamallapuram Lighthouse, Chennai (Madras)

Originally closed in 2001 during tensions between the country and insurgents, Mamallapuram Lighthouse has now opened to the public for exploration. The modern circular lighthouse (dating back to 1905) stands atop a rocky outcrop next to the country's oldest temple/beacon, built in 640 CE. Enter the lighthouse and climb its many stairs for spectacular views of the sea and the ancient temple carved into the rockface. Come prepared to climb and bring plenty of water. Good place for a family outing. View from the top is too good but all steps are too steep and need to shed lot of energy. I would not recommend this place during summer as it is too hot...

If you want to get an birds eye view of entire Mahabalipuram and host of monuments/raaths/chariots around, Light house is best place to visit with family & friends for which one has to buy ticket at the rate Rs 10/- per person. Get ready to climb iron made difficult stairs which most of people find difficult to climb but once you are finished, you would feel as if you are on the top of the World. Must climb and enjoy & see birds eye view of the entire area. Good Luck.

Breath taking bird's eye view of the Mahabalipuram beach and the temples and other places of interest. They charge 10/ as ticket to pay a visit on top but be prepared to climb the spiral metal staircase that is not only narrow but uses the same way for going up as well as climbing down.. you need to wait with a lot of patience as the place is limited on top. They have approximately 20,000 visitors on any day in an average. But once you get to top you are have a treat to your eyes. This was built in 18th century.
