Kamakshi Amman Temple, Chennai (Madras)

(4.4/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
Head to the historic city of Kanchipuram and witness a prime example of Dravidian architecture at Kamakshi Amman Temple. According to historians, the temple was probably built around 6 CE. It features gopurams, which are covered in gold overlays. Its main deity is Kamakshi. Notice as the god sits in a yoga-like position as opposed to the traditional standing position of many other deities. This signifies peace and prosperity. • Sculptures of the gods in Hinduism Today in the tower gate is not to be missed. See carefully through the zoom lens if you have a camera can see with the naked eye, but are better.

  • A very popular Hindu temple in Chennai. Well connected by bus and like any Amman temple, this is crowded on Tuesdays and Fridays. As this temple is surrounded by dense shops and narrow streets parking is often challenging; you may have to park little far and walk down to the temple. This temple is under renovation (as of this writing) and hence the public is not allowed to see the presiding deity (the Goddess) at the Sanctum Sanctorum; rituals/pooja performed only to the Urchavar Goddess. Make this as temple to see if you visit Chennai for a casual or pilgrimage tour.
  • Once this place was full of mango trees..As per histroy Ambal had done thabas here..due to thabas her temperature went high, which was cooled down by Periyava Sri Sankarachariyar of Kanchipuram by installing a chakkaram..
  • NOW PUBLIC ARE ALLOWED TO VISIT MAIN DEITY. NO PROBLEM EVEN RENOVATION WORK IS GOING ON. AS A HINDU ONE MUST VISIT THIS TEMPLE SUCH A NICE TEMPLE.
  • Awsome place. One has to experience the powee of this god.
  • Visit here every three months. Very powerful deity and been visiting this place for the last 20 years.
