St. Alex Church, Calangute

4.2
#9 of 68 in Historic Sites in Goa
Church Tourist Spot
Admire the striking white facade of St. Alex Church, where thousands of Christian devotees gather for prayer and communion. Built in 1741 by the village communities, the church was financed thanks to donations and the goodwill of locals. As you approach the compound, notice how the dome resembles that of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Examine the Indian-style "cupola falsa" inside, as well as the seven altars and the main sanctuary. Afterwards, head outside to the churchyard to see the Grotto of Our Lady. The museum nearby offers a detailed history of the church. Put St. Alex Church on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Goa travel itinerary planner.

Where to stay in Goa

One of the more affordable regions for staying in India, Goa offers a good range of sleeping options, from budget to luxurious. Visitors looking for that feeling of home away from home can explore rental apartments, which offer more space than a hotel room and often come with fully equipped kitchens. Look for an apartment in Oxel or Siolim, peaceful villages with gated communities and a range of facilities. Beach houses and private villas offer an alternative for those with deeper pockets, while beach huts/shacks work well for budget-conscious travelers.

  • Churches were once the centre of village life in the Catholic areas of Goa. This one too is/was. But now, it is caught up in the midst of tall, multistoreyed tourist complexes in this beach village. A centuries old church though...
  • very nice place ,must visit
  • So I went to this church 3 days back on my trip in Goa. We were with the families with two small kids. The moment we entered the church, the priest come marching towards us with his rude language - "You can't come in here. What do you think you can wear anything and come here. Go from here" . He literally held my hand and pushed us outside. Horrible and Pathetic behaviour from the man of his position. His objection was on Goa coloured T Shirt and the Goa Beach Hat and Goa Long shorts. He could have politely said "Sorry but this dress isn't allowed" Instead he chose to drive us by manhandling. Made me wonder since when did the personality of an individual took over the bigger notion of the church's objective ? Left us very angry, disappointed and embarrassed. I wish we could report his behaviour somewhere. I won't recommend it for a visit.
  • One of the most beautiful churches I have seen in Goa. The pulpit and altar is designed artistically.
  • Nice historical place
