Kutch Museum, Bhuj

(4/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web)
Reportedly the oldest museum in Gujarat, Kutch Museum holds the biggest collection of Kshatrapa inscriptions next to the samplings of the vanished Kutchi script. Maharao Khengarji founded the museum in 1877. The collection moved to the present Italian Gothic style building sited on a lakeshore ten years later. Explore the local tribal cultures through the selections of embroideries, folk arts, musical instruments, and arms. Notable exhibits include an 18th century wooden sculpture of Airavat--a white elephant with seven trunks painted with flowers carrying the Hindu god Indra--and a cannon, which Tipu Sultan traded for Kutch horses. • The small museum takes barely an hour to finish, but it leaves you rich with the knowledge of the region. One can see pre-historic fossils in this region, the early civilization artifacts recovered from Dholavira, life size models of the different castes of locals here, old idols & epitaphs on the ground floor. On the first floor, we are exposed to the indigenous textiles of this region, fine silverware, ivoryware and other art forms. A must visit on any local itinerary and do visit it before any where else as there is a good chance, you may be tempted to change your plans after seeing what all can be explored in this region.
  • one of oldest Museum of Gujarat. Kutch museum was established by Khengarji III, the Maharao of Cutch State. It was founded on 1 July 1877. The museum was earlier known as Fergusson Museum.
  • Gujarat has limited Buddhist history. One Buddha bronze idol of 6 to 7th century is really admirable here. Some artifacts of Harrappan era from Dholavira are also worth the visit. There are few Jain marble and other statues.
  • Lots of information Regarding past of that particular region If didn't love to see all such old /antiques please do not visit
  • Nice place must visit only take 1/2 hour
