Marvel at a dream set in sandstone at Mukteswara Temple, a landmark complex and a jewel of Odisha architecture. With terraced 10.6 m (35 ft) tall spires, this compact architectural ensemble displays some excellent Kalinga architecture, which heralded a new era at the time of construction. Built in the mid-10th century, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is covered with carved figures of ascetics in different meditative positions. Exquisitely carved sculptures and arch entrances, as well as diamond-shaped, latticed windows, are surrounded by depictions of monkeys adorning the main porch. Walk around the temple and you'll feel like time is slowing down, as the sunlight begins to change color against the masterfully carved sandstone. Make Mukteswara Temple a centerpiece of your Bhubaneswar vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Bhubaneswar trip itinerary builder.
