Landmark Religious Site
Pay a visit to Lingaraja Temple, the largest and one of the oldest temple complexes in the area. The main tower stands at 55 m (180 ft) tall and dominates the surrounding area. Believed to have been built by kings of the Somavamsi dynasty in the 11th century CE, this historical place of worship honors Harihara, a form of Shiva and Vishnu. It represents a distinctly Kalinga architectural style, marked by dense iconography, historical and mythological references, and an idol auspiciously placed under a tree (here, the deity of Lingaraj originally lay under a mango). Stroll the walled enclosure's 50 shrines, each offering a wealth of artworks inside masterfully carved buildings. • Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Lingaraja Temple is one of the largest Hindu temples in Bhubaneswar and was built during the 11th century. The temple is also one of the few remaining specimens of the Kalinga style architecture and was built by the rulers of the Ganga dynasty.
  • Amazing temple, at least from the outside - unfortunately non-Hindus (which seems to mean non-Indians) are not allowed in - and no information on how to gain any access/info. Though I did read there was a viewing platform somewhere, which I eventually found and caught some great snaps. It would be nice if there was a little more explanation about this for tourists. (If anyone is reading this - and wants to view from there, the platform is on the right side of the temple wall, as you are facing the main entrance. Walk around to the closed gate on the right wall, and the viewing platform is just there).
  • Great temple but very poor administration and governance. They don't allow camera and phones inside the temple premises. The Government could improve infrastructure around the temple to make it a attractive tourist destination and generating revenue for its upkeep. It is also a bad thing to not allow people from other religions. Hinduism is all encompassing and hence this prohibition is anti-hindu and should be abolished.
  • Very beautiful temple of Lord Shiva. There are many temples. It shows the great art and architect of ancient India. A must visit place in Bhubaneswar.
  • Take your time over there it's very peaceful. Such a glorious ancient architecture. You will definitely feel the positive vibes.
