Lingaraja Temple, Bhubaneswar

4.3
Pay a visit to Lingaraja Temple, the largest and one of the oldest temple complexes in the area. The main tower stands at 55 m (180 ft) tall and dominates the surrounding area. Believed to have been built by kings of the Somavamsi dynasty in the 11th century CE, this historical place of worship honors Harihara, a form of Shiva and Vishnu. It represents a distinctly Kalinga architectural style, marked by dense iconography, historical and mythological references, and an idol auspiciously placed under a tree (here, the deity of Lingaraj originally lay under a mango). Stroll the walled enclosure's 50 shrines, each offering a wealth of artworks inside masterfully carved buildings. • A Very Good Temple. Not very clean. The Approach to the Temple is quite congested. As the Local Pandas control the Inside, the visit leaves visitor dissapointed.  more »
  • This temple is in the Heart of the city. Mobiles, purse, cameras not allowed. A very big temple with architectural marvel, The Pnadas says,,there are 108 small temples inside this temple. If you want ...  more »

  • FOREIGNERS aren't allowed inside but can get a great view from the viewing platform: when facing the main entrance walk right and follow the wall around until you see a whitish structure. BEWARE of the cheaters who will approach you with a book of names, ask you to write your name and country, and then demand a 'donation'. DO NOT give them anything - it will go straight into their pocket!!
  • This is one place where a lot can be done by govt authorities for its upkeep..,really u have such beautiful temples and u don't do anything to preserve it..Let me suggest putting up an entrance fee which can be used for its upkeep. To begin with the streets are narrow, the security is tough really u can't even try escaping with a small oldest version of mobile phone inside. The pandas will hover over you best to escape or if u can give ur offerings.Theres no instructions as to how to follow a path/ route to get inside the temple however there's not much crowd also.First impression how can one not clean the insides of a temple..Really it's all damp and sticky at some places..And the temples bell have darkened with centuries of dust..One thing that's commendable is as usual you ancestors for their architecture..No really that's such a pretty place and how can one not really take care of it.After visiting 100s of temples in the south u will definitely not like this one's upkeep.. Temple authorities needs to do something about it..
  • Word of advice, keep change of 100s and plenty of 10s in your pocket. We kept it and hence never paid more to pandas. The architecture is awesome for something that was build 1200 years ago.
  • It is the proof of intelligent architecture plan of ancient India... The whole temple is covered by amazing design and structures. There are almost 1000 temples including small and this one.
  • Good architecture. Very old temple. There are collection of temples of different deities. But beware of priests who will ask for money every time you visit the temples inside the campus. Mobile is not allowed.
