  • I visited here couple of weeks back, why you may ask, because it says "Ashokan". But anyways there was nothing much of a significance of this place. Its definitely very well maintained, clean and tidy...  more »
  • So yes, you see the elephant and old Bhrami writings on a rock but the garden feels sad to walk through.  more »
  • The rock edict depicts Asoka's entry towards Buddhahood after the Kalinga war. There is not much to see except the edict itself . The nearby surroundings are clean and picturesque.  more »

  • The amazing and picturesque place was explored by Lt M. Kittoe in the year of 1837. Here, you will see eleven out of fourteen renowned Rock Edicts of Ashoka. Moreover, all the rock edicts are in scribed in Magadhi languages. In addition, Prakrita and the script are considered as of early Brahmi. The Rock Edicts of Ashoka are located in Dhauli on the Dhaulagiri Hills which is 8 kms from Bhubaneswar. The Dhaulagiri Hills are a popular attraction as the war of Kalinga by Emperor Ashoka was fought here in 261 BC. It was only after this deadly war, that Ashoka turned to Buddhism. These Edicts are the earliest known records in India. The edicts contain inscriptions of Ashoka’s ideals and principles. The Edicts are a collection of 33 inscriptions, carved on pillars, big boulders and caves. They are astonishingly well conserved, in spite of the fact that they date back to the 3rd century BC. Ashoka describes himself in one of the inscription as Beloved of Gods and King Priya Darshi. Language used in these inscriptions is mainly Pali with slight variations in dialect. However the 13th Edict was written in Greek. One of Edicts has a sculpture of an elephant. The beautiful white domed Vishwa Shanti Stupa which preaches peace to the world is also built on this hill. The Dhaveleswar Temple and a Siva Temple are also constructed here. One can enjoy good views of the city and the striking Daya River which flows below the hill silently.
  • Dhauli or Dhabaleshwar is a Buddhist shrine built by Dharmashoka, the Maurya emperor of Magadh (Patna) who conquered Kalinga (Odisha) in a dreadful heinous war but then converted into a peacemonger Buddhist. He built this shrine on the bank of River Daya (also known as Raktaganga in Indian history) near to the Kalinga battlefield where he also wrote the Buddhist edicts for his followers.
