Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web
Dating back to the early Mauryan period, UNESCO-protected Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi features an impressive collection of about 50 examples of Buddhist art and culture, including stupas, monolithic pillars, temples, monasteries, and sculptures. Of these, the great stupa stands as the oldest stone structure in India, and perhaps the site's most popular attraction. Altogether, the complex boasts three stupas, including possibly one of the earliest Buddhist temples in India, Temple 17. As you wander the complex, try to spot the Brahmi inscriptions on some of the monuments, especially Stupa 1. Consider hiring a tour guide or reading up on the attraction's history before visiting for a more in-depth experience.
