Visit one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines at Bhimashankar Temple, dedicated to one of the manifestations of Shiva. Located in a remote area at the source of a long river, the ancient temple dates back to around the 13th century CE, when the shrine was first mentioned in literature. Admire the artistry of the towering shikhara, built by influential statesman Nana Phadnavis during the 18th century. Learn about the story behind the Jyotirlinga shrines--each said to mark a site where Shiva appeared as a column of light--and explore the pleasant wilderness that surrounds the temple, now home to a nature reserve with hiking trails and bird-watching opportunities. • I came to visit this temple, making a journey of 4 hours from Pune (buses depart from Shivajinagar Bus Stand). The temple seems to be quite modest, although elegant (the 13rd century) but it is important because it is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga in India. The temple is composed of old and new structures. A classic temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. You are in the area don't let him escape (just to the importance of the Temple).

  • Small Place.. If Possible to take personal food with you... As you have less eating options.. Beautiful temple.. Also have ATM facility inside..
  • Nice place to visit as it's located on top of the hill. you got 2 options to visit if going from mumbai. 1. By road via pune bypass. around 230km 2. Direct into the village near hill. and then Trek from there. usually takes 3-5 hours. Again 2 routes . one is easy one. other, experienced trekkers won't be disappointed. If you need any further information let me know. Prefer during full moon. Top of the hill is a perfect location to go and explore and have some clicks. morning as well as evening would be ideal time.
  • Approach road from pune is not at all good to drive.. too many patches and narrow to drive.. although good for those who love driving in ghats and in short turns.. Management and maintenance of temple is like hell.. Maharashtra govt. should have a look at it.. coz it is one of the twelve jyotirlings in india..
  • "Best place ever in Rainy Season for both Traveling As well as God Darshan. Food & Loadging Available."
  • Famous jyotirlinga is the main attraction here. Small place with human settlement around the temple. Clouds and fog can be seen merging with the top of trees; a visual treat. Small trekking trails behind the temple will lead you to few hilltops with splendid views. Locals call it Bombay point as Bombay can be seen from the top of the hill. I'm not sure about this as it was all foggy and I was finding it hard to locate my friends.
