(4.6/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
Venture into Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple, a temple carved out of a monolithic rock sometime in the 9th century and later renovated by the founder of the city, Kempe Gowda. If visiting in January, you'll witness a yearly event where the sculpted works allow the sun to illuminate the shivalinga for one hour only--a testament to ancient knowledge and craftsmanship exercised here. As the oldest temple in the region and major architectural landmark, the temple draws steady crowds, so expect to be one of many tourists. Put Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple into our Bengaluru travel itinerary maker and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • One of the ancient temples in Bangalore which has its own history and importance. This temple has a secret channel connected to shivaganga temple. This temple unique in nature in terms of its architecture, lord shiva located between the two big rocks and you cannot walk straight inside the temple to complete pradakshina. This place is much crowded during sankranthi as that's the only day the sunshine will fall on the shivlinga. Lots of people visit the temple on Shivaratri. So it is very busy during this time. There are plenty of markets and shops nearby.
