  • The Kiradu temples are a group of ruined temples located in the Barmer district of Rajasthan, India. The Kiradu town is located in the Thar desert, about 35 km from Barmerand 157 km from Jaisalmer. The ruins of at least five temples exist at Kiradu. Of these, the Someshvara temple, dedicated to Shiva, is the best-preserved structure. Epigraphic evidence suggests that the temples were constructed during the 11-12th century by the vassals of the Chaulukya(Solanki) monarchs.
  • The Kiradu temples are located at about 35 km from Barmer and 157 km from Jaisalmer in a town situated in Thar desert in the Indian state of Rajasthan. There are five temples in all and most remarkable of them is Someshvara Temple .These temples feature impressive sculpture and a Solanki style of architecture. The Kiradu temples are a group of five temples and are grouped as ancient temples, an important site from the archaeological point of view. The largest and the most impressive amongst them is the Someshvara Temple. Built in the 11th century, the Someshvara ancient temple is said to be the best example of its kind today. Constructed in honour of Lord Shiva (the Destroyer in the holy trinity of Hindu gods), it has a rather stumpy multi-turreted tower and beautiful sculptures dedicated to the god. 💖 The inner sanctum has a resplendent image of the Lord. At its base, is a large reverse-curve lotus, which has a resemblance with the early Chola Temples of south India. This ancient temple also depicts scenes from the Hindu epic Ramayana. Other notable features are sculptures of apsaras (mythical dancing girls from the abode of the Gods) and vyalas (a griffin-like mythical beast generally associated with the Buddha) which were rarely seen after 1050AD in temple architecture. All in all, although Barmer is a bit out of the way you'll get your money's worth when you visit Someshvara. 🌻 Kiradu was originally known as Kiradkot. It was ruled by the Kirad clan of Rajputs between the 6th and 8th centuries. In the early period they had been feudal subordinates of the Chalukya of Gujarat and hence the latter's influence is seen in the temples.Traces of the Gupta period are found in the older Bhagwan Shiva temples. 💫 According to an inscription , they were destroyed by Turks ; Muhammad Ghori. Later on, reconstructed by the Chalukya ruler Bhima ll. A sad story is told of the decline of this place. An ancient sage left behind his disciple to the care of the people of Kiradu, but except for a potter's wife no one carried out the sage's wish. The saint cursed the town but told the potter's wife beforehand to leave and never turn back.Out of curiosity she turned to take one last look at her hometown and was instantly turned to stone. Her statue is still visible in the outskirts of the town.
  • Kiradu temples is a group of ruined temples without any idols for worship. No pujas performed. Totally ruined. But, magnificent sculpture. At a distance of 35Kms from Barmer town of Rajasthan. The road leading to Kiradu is a single road, but, in very good condition (Oct2017). These are 11th century temples destroyed during fight with Turushqs. Worth visit. When you plan a visit to Jaisalmer, you can plan a trip to here. One can spend maximum an hour in this place.
  • This is a beautiful temple. I would love to come again and again.
  • Must visit place near barmer. The remains of at least five temples have been discovered at Kiradu. Of these, only the Someshvara temple is in notable condition. Its surviving parts are sufficient to exactly reconstruct the original temple design. However, it is clear that the original temple was highly decorated with sculptures, including figures of animals and humans.
