Ellora Caves, Aurangabad

(4.7/5 based on 1,700+ reviews on the web)
Discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ellora Caves, a series of 34 temples carved in the Charanandri hills. The majestic, stone-cut cave temples were built between the fifth and 10th centuries, carved into a tall basalt cliff in an uninterrupted sequence. Despite some of the structures being dedicated to Hindu deities, and others serving as Jain and Buddhist monasteries, the temples harmoniously coexisted for hundreds of years. Admire the architectural splendor, elaborate detailing, and intricate decorations of the massive, multi-religion complex. • A must visit place. The mesmerising views of the caves just stuns your mind. I kept on thinking that how come people in those times made these caves at all. It's 60 min journey from Aurangabad and nea...  more »
  • I will not dwell on the historical details that you can very well read on the Internet. I can testify that ELLORA alone is worth (also with Ajanta Caves) on the trip. Recommend you go there early in the morning to avoid schoolchildren (therefore very well educated). And advice to also have a guide who will explain the details of the various temples to make you enjoy the visit. Attention that the emphasis of the Indians that are offered as guides and English speakers sometimes is really hard to understand. They set prices and content that are reported by a sign that show. About 1400 rupees. However the ELLORA caves are NOT to BE MISSED!

  • One of the best historical site I have visited these days. Maintained but not that well when compared to international standards. Definitely can be maintained with more care. Definite recommendation from my side but be ready for long walks and to spend good time to enJoy it better.
  • Nice place with historic importance. But the carvings have worn out to a great extent I believe. Government should have done better to preserve the rich culture and heritage.
  • Simply wonderful. It makes you understand how developed the culture of India was in the ancient times. Incredible place and a must see overall. Well maintained by the government. Do hire a guide to understand the place better.
  • Cave no. 16 Kailash Gufa is excellent and jain Gufas are also very good.
  • We visited Ellora and Ajanta in the same week; and my personal opinion would be that Ellora has examples of everything that Ajanta offers and more. If you have just two days to spare, I would recommend spending the time in Ellora and giving Ajanta a skip. Though Ajanta may be older and more unique due to the paintings, the scale of work and the grandeur of Ellora is unmatched. Ellora needs at least two days if you want to cover all the caves and explore at a leisurely pace. Ideal trip: - Arrive early in the morning and enter the cave complex by around 8 am. - Hire a guide if you want to cover all the essential spots within one day. - Else, buy a guide book outside for Rs.100, which gives an overview of all the essential caves. - Start with the Kailasanatha temple and then cover the caves in either direction. - Some of the bigger caves will need more time, so you can skip or quickly walk through the smaller caves. - Take a bottle of water and some eatables to keep you energized for all the walking and climbing. - Do not forget to carry powerful and bright torches!
