Some of the caves were carved in the cliff side as far back as the second century BCE, while others were added in the fifth and sixth centuries. Take a guided tour of the caves, used as prayer halls and monasteries in their time, abandoned, and then rediscovered in 1819. Admire the statues and murals inside, considered masterpieces of religious art, or get up to the viewing platform situated across the river to enjoy sweeping views of the complex. • The caves are amazing and the painting is still vivid. It is a shame that more people do not visit these.  more »

  • Buddhist Cave Monument, beautifully carved out of rocks and sculptured incredibly. The paintings which were made almost 2000 years back still exists and it is well maintained by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). While visiting Ajanta, first go to the view point and then walk down to the caves. There are wonderful views when we walk down from the view point to caves, which includes a water fall also.
  • Beautiful caves indeed! Great architecture and carving done here. A really good place to visit!
  • It's a world heritage site, an ancient Buddhist cave complex. The caves are numbered. Some have paintings, now faded somewhat, on the cave walls. The later caves have chaitya halls. Carving has been done with great skill.
  • Another winder work.. god knows how long it's taken for people to carve the huge rocks to make the caves And sculptures...one should have loads of energy and lots of time to see all the caves.. seriously one whole day won't be enough.. photographs are not allowed inside.. unfortunately most of the statues are in bad condition..
  • Awesome Place to visit... Architecture of caves built and Paintings of this place is just awesome... It may sound to some that this is something boring, once they see the paintings of that early vedic era and their thought at that time is mind blowing... One Should definitely not miss this place... Hire guide, they will explain you the paintings and architecture... One should have 4-5 hours at hand for exploring the complete beauty of this place...
